The Future is Flexible:

Flexible Mobile Screens in Education

Even before the current pandemic began, popularity of blended and online learning was on the rise across Canada (Barbour, 2019). Online students enrolled in courses, within learning management systems such as Canvas, are able to complete their assignments and readings on their mobile devices. Advancements in the development of Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) screens into rollable or flexible formats provide unique innovations to enhance anytime, anywhere learning.

What are OLED Screens?

Carbon acts as a natural light source for the screen rather than requiring a backlight used in traditional LEDs. This allows OLED:

  • better energy efficiency

  • increased flexibility

  • thinner screens

Mobile Applications of OLED Technology

There are several models of OLED televisions on the market in Canada at the moment.  There are many other OLED devices that are in development and require improvements in durability and affordability before they can be available commerically.

About Me

My name is DeeDee Perrott and I am a secondary science teacher at a Online/Outreach School in Alberta. I have been been involved in online education for the past 14 years as a teacher, marker, and curriculum writer. Currently, I am developing a new online secondary science program for my school using the Canvas LMS.  As part of that development, I am always exploring new technology to increase student engagement. I am excited with what flexible mobile screen design in combination with 5G technology could mean for completing field studies and scientific research outside of the classroom.  This website was developed as part of the Masters of Educational Technology program at the University of British Columbia.
